Thirty years ago, a man called Dennis Baynes had a good idea...
His chicken farm and bed & breakfast business at Bridge End Mill in Allendale weren't keeping up with the growing demands on the Baynes family. So Dennis bought a Volkswagen Dormobile and started ferrying locals around to make ends meet.
When young Nigel Baynes returned from seeking his fortune in London a few years later, he took over from Dennis as Allendale's no. 1 'odd-jobber' – adding landscape gardening, calor gas sales, a milkround, and being a part-time fireman, to Allendale's quaint one-man taxi service.
Thirty years and a lot of hard work has grown Baynes Travel into a business that Dennis would have been proud of. The chickens all retired long ago along with the clapped out Dormobile, and Bridge End Mill is now home to a modern fleet of cars, people carriers and coaches carrying passengers from across the region.
But Nigel still holds to Dennis' philosophy of always working hard and trying your best at whatever you set out to do. It's not a very sophisticated business strategy but it seems to work today as well as it did thirty years ago.

We have over 25 years of experience providing luxurious wedding car and guest transport for weddings throughout the North East. Whether the special event is held in one of our many top-class hotels in the area or in a marquee in a remote field in Northumberland, we can accommodate your requirements.
Tours & excursions
Baynes coach tours are certainly a cut above the other tour operators' coach tours. Our tours are adventures, and always described as fun! We have some fantastic adventurous coach tours in England and Scotland throughout the year, so whether it's a trip to the theatre or the Edinburgh Festival, or a 5 day tour of the Highlands you're after, Baynes coach tours are the answer.
School transport
Baynes Route 987 provides school transport in the Tyne Valley for independent schools Dame Allan's, Westfield, NSB, Church High, Central High, NPS and RGS. Let us do the school run for you - we use our modern coaches with comfortable seat and full seatbelts, and our drivers are enhanced CRB-checked. The service is extremely reliable and personal, and flexible contracts are available.
Airport transfers
We understand that when you're frantically running around trying to plan a holiday, the last thing you want to worry about is how you're going to get to the airport. That's why Baynes Travel offers transportation to and from the airport for individuals, families and even large groups of people.
Walkers & hikers
Baynes can help you find the undiscovered kingdom! We love to ferry groups of walkers to starting points around the North East and the numerous walks that can be accessed from Allendale such as Isaac's Tea Trail.
Shooting parties
We are central to the premier grouse and pheasant shooting in England, and we're only 45 minutes from both Carlisle and Newcastle airports. Baynes can take the nightmare out of the logistics of your shooting excursions.
